Without a doubt, J.J. Crowne can write and construct a song. From the get-go in Songs of Innocence and Experience, the experience is proven and appreciated. Out of the 12 songs, the listener will be hard pressed not to be inspired and enlightened by the cool energy, and intriguing moments Crowne architects.
In "Only Time" the chorus is this amazingly sounding wall of sound. It is as if the speakers will burst. His voice is aged enough that he doesn't sound fabricated; he is soulful without being too R&B. Crowne has the voice appropriate for each of the tracks, and in "Only Time" the message is clear, as is his passion for his prose.
Range and Capabilities Never Disappoint
This writer appreciated the ordering on Songs of Innocence and Experience. The listener has a nice build up, and Crowne's range and lyric capabilities never disappoint. In "Another Day of Love," it did feel a bit gushy and a little too joyful at times, but give the guy some credit for trying to be uplifting. Even Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest would crack at a smile at this gem. It is happiness put to music.
In "Everything About You" Crowne begins the track with this beautiful piano stretch. It is as if the keys are tugging at the heart, begging for a smile. This track surprised this writer; she didn't expect to like it, but found herself humming along. The story is intriguing and resonated as if one's own personal history flipped along the sidelines like pages in a book.
The next tune, "Moments" is another lighter rock piece. Listeners who enjoy Bread or Peter Cetera will like this track. Crowne doesn't complicate the 'moment' and one can slip softly into the chorus like a comfortable conversation.
What is most interesting in Crowne is his use of color without over producing or relying on eletronica manipulation. In "Toy Soldiers," "Kindred Hearts," "She and He" and "Goodbye Again' the listener tags along for the ride and never grips to stay on board; rather, the listener dangles their feat as song moves along like a truck on a summer's day. It's remarkable.
